Alexey Volodin (piano) , Russia

 

Alexei Volodin was born in 1977 in St. Petersburg, and began taking piano lessons there at the age of nine. A year later he moved to Moscow, where he studied first with I. Chaklina and later with T. Zelikman at the Gnessin Music School. In 1994 he enrolled in the master class of Professor Elisso Virsaladze at the Moscow Conservatoire.

In 2003 he won the First Prize at the ninth edition of the Concours Géza Anda in Zurich, which gave a decisive impulse to his career.

He is one of the most accomplished pianists of his generation being appraised by the international press for his outstanding technique, his interpretational skills, and the beauty of his sound and the versatility of his repertoire.

Alexei Volodin performs regularly with many prestigious orchestras, such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Filarmonica del Teatro alla Scala, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater, Moscow Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Philharmonic and Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. He has worked with leading conductors like Valery Gergiev, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Chailly, Mikhail Pletnev, Semyon Bychkov, Marek Janowski, Zoltán Kocsis, Lawrence Foster, David Zinman, Tugan Sokhiev, Gerd Albrecht, Yakov Kreizberg and Vladimir Fedoseyev, among others.

He also is a sought-after recitalist. He performs at practically all important piano series and festivals worldwide, including Concertgebouw Amsterdam (Meesterpianisten Series), Suntory Hall Tokyo (World Pianist Series), Vienna (Konzerthaus and Theater an der Wien), New York (Metropolitan Museum), Madrid (Ibermmúsica Series), Barcelona (Ibercamera Series), Paris (Théâtre des Champs-Elysées), Stuttgart (Meisterpianisten Series), Frankfurt (Alte Oper), Lisbon (Gulbenkian), Budapest (Liszt Academy) and Brussels (Bozar).

Alexei Volodin was chosen first «Artist of the month» of the new Mariinsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg by appointment of Valery Gergiev with whom he has often collaborated with tours in USA, Japan, Germany and Spain. Volodin has been present at important festivals: Lucerne, La Roque d'Anthéron, Toulouse, Montpellier, Sintra, Ruhr, Baden-Baden, Heidelberg, Bad Kissingen, Bad Reichenhall, Lichfield, Merano, Moscow and St. Petersburg (White Nights).

Upcoming performances include recitals in London (Wigmore Hall), Neumarkt (Reitstadel), Essen (Philharmonie), Munich (Herkulessaal), and reinvitations to Amsterdam, Vienna, Barcelona, Zurich, Milano, New York and Tokyo, together with extensive recital tours in the Netherlands, USA, Italy and Spain.

Volodin has recorded CDs with the labels «Live classics» and »Challenge classics» with works by Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Chopin
