Tao Lin was born in Beijing and began his musical studies at the Beijing Central Music School. He was awarded a Chinese Government Scholarship to study at the Moscow State Conservatoire, where he earned a doctorate in Conducting, and has subsequently been a prizewinner at the Prokofiev, Fitelberg, and Malko Conducting Competitions. He has served as Assistant Conductor to Valery Gergiev at the Mariinsky Theatre, Assistant Conductor to Alexander Dmitriev, Principal Guest Conductor of the Tomsk Symphony Orchestra, and Principal Associate Conductor of the Krasnoyarsk Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared with the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Chinese National Symphony Orchestra, the Krasnoyarsk Opera, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Symphony Orchestras of Beijing, Taipei, St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Prague. Currently he is the youngest Artistic Director and Principal Conductor in Russia, leading the Kuzbass Symphony Orchestra in Kemerovo.

Lin Tao was named by Yuri Temirkanov as "one of the most talented conductors of young generation".
